This special community event is an opportunity to participate in indigenous ceremony, listen to ancient song and chanting, drum and rattle together, purify your mind and find vision for your life.

The Huichol Tribe
The Huichol (Wixaritari) are a small indigenous tribe of approximately 35,000, living in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico. They are considered one of the last cultures in North America to have maintained their pre-Columbian traditions unto the modern day.

Origins of the Deer Dance Ceremony
According to Huichol cosmology, the origins of this ceremony date back to the birth of the Sun. The dance is a reenactment of creation itself and honors our sacred relationship to the light. Kauyumari (The Magical Deer Spirit) is representative of our super-conscious mind and acts as an intermediary between our hearts and the spiritual world of nature.

Brant Secunda
Huichol Shaman & Healer
Brant Secunda is an internationally acclaimed shaman, healer, and teacher in the indigenous Huichol tradition of Mexico. During an intensive 12-year apprenticeship, Brant became the adopted grandson and close companion of Don Jose Matsuwa, the renowned shaman who passed away in 1990 at the age of 110. Brant founded the Dance of the Deer Foundation Center for Shamanic Studies in 1979 and leads seminars, retreats, and pilgrimages worldwide. His work has been documented on television, radio, and in articles and books throughout the world.

To help provide sustainable cultural and economic support for the Huichol tribe, Brant founded the Huichol Foundation, which continues to expand upon his more than four decades of indigenous cultural preservation projects throughout the Sierra Madre Mountains and around the globe.

Alongside other dignitaries including President Jimmy Carter, Brant cofounded the Peace University in Berlin and was also a co-founder of the Humanistic Medicine Conference with the World Health Organization. Recognized as a global thought leader and spiritual teacher, Brant has been a lecturer at the Mayo Clinic, the American Holistic Medical Association Conferences and a faculty member of the Five Branches Institute of Chinese Medicine.

Striving to bridge the worlds of fitness and spirituality, Brant co-authored the award-winning book Fit Soul, Fit Body: 9 Keys to a Healthier, Happier You. Tickets:

Bloom of the Present
January 17th through February 21st

Teacher: Carla Brennan

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED: Contact Betsy Blessing at:
Please only register if you can attend at least 4 of the 5 classes. Attending all 5 sessions is best. Space is limited; we will have a wait list if class fills.

COST: This 5-week class will be offered by donation. We have a suggested sliding scale of $60 - $100. However, more or less is gratefully accepted. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. Non-monetary donations are also accepted.

This 5-class will focus on the fundamentals of mindfulness meditation with an special emphasis on working with physical pain. It is for people new to meditation as well as experienced students who would like support for their practice.

Each class will include group meditation, explanatory talks and Q & A. You will be expected to meditate daily a minimum of 20 minutes during the five weeks. Handouts and readings will be distributed each week along with assignments. A guided meditation audio will be emailed after each class.

We will:
- Learn to meditate, including several approaches for focusing the mind and paying attention.
- Offer suggestions and support for creating a regular daily practice.
- Explore what mindfulness is and is not; learn why is it effective in pain management.
- Discover how our thoughts and emotions can alleviate or intensify our pain.
- Learn what to do about pain-how to work with intense and unwanted sensations

As living creatures, we are all subject to pain; it's serves as a simple warning that the body is injured or out of balance. Therefore we all need to learn to respond to pain with greater ease and skill. Most pain is temporary, often fleeting or easily alleviated by medical treatments. However, many of us, due to known or unknown causes, have chronic pain which can undermine the quality of life and can be difficult to manage. This class is for people with either ordinary or chronic levels of pain.

Even with extensive modern research, the exact mechanisms of pain are still not known. But we do know that is pain is actually experienced in the brain, not the body, and that how we think about or react to pain can significantly affect its severity and intensity. Using meditation approaches, we can retrain the mind to perceive pain differently and we can create an attitude of caring attention. We can learn to relax even when experiencing intense unpleasant sensations.

Mindfulness is the practice of bringing nonjudgemental awareness to our moment to moment changing experience. This approach can be applied to all aspects of life, whether we are experiencing physical sensations, sensory input, thoughts, or the vast range of feelings and emotions. Mindfulness is part of a larger group of teachings in Buddhism that can lead to spiritual maturity, increased compassion and inner freedom. These qualities contribute to more peace in our lives and in the world around us.

CARLA BRENNAN has been practicing meditation for over 40 years and has taught Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for 18 years. She is the guiding teaching for Bloom of the Present Insight Meditation in Santa Cruz.

Cosmic Dance
with DJ Moody Shapes and Light Facilitation by Brynne Flidais
Saturday, February 11th, 8:00-10:00PM

We dance and move and breathe to feel the cosmic pranic life force swirling within us...

DJ Moody Shapes (aka Michael Reinhold) has a passion for music that inspires ecstatic movement. He is always looking for the unique sonic gems that give a sense of permission to move in ways you may have never moved before, to light up the dance floor with the joy of discovery and the unexpected. Drawing from the freshest of world and electronic music, his sets span an eclectic swath of tempos and genres, taking dancers on an adventurous journey of freeform expression.

Brynne Flidais brings Light Facilitation and Cosmic Channeling to the dance floor, infusing our movement exploration with cosmic knowledge.
Just as the moon's force pulls the ocean's tides, our bodies are influenced by the movements of celestial spheres. Blending our moving meditation with astrological wisdom facilitates a deep understanding of how the dance of the planets is connected to our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves. This practice strengthens the subtle messages of our inner and outer universes, enabling us to more tangibly manifest our soul's purpose."

Please help us hold the container of this dance ... please no talking in the space, you are invited to communicate through your body and movement ... please request permission through eye contact or playful dance before making contact, and respect others' choice to dance alone -- hands-to-the-heart (namaste) is a good way to say "no thanks" or to end a dance... please no chemical colognes or perfumes (for those of us with sensitivities)... please respect others' inner journey and dance space... please turn your cellphone to mute. ♥

Meditations on Loving Oneself
February 25th, 10:00 - 11:30 am

Of all the people to start falling in love with, we often forget the closest, most obvious person: ourselves. To fall in love with ourselves is to fall in love with everyone and everything around us. Meditation is a sweet balm that opens the heart with tenderness to the beauty unfolding in each heart in each moment. It is a natural way of being that, like an old dream we may have forgotten, will re-awaken when we hear of it. This two part series is a dialogue and meditation-based exploration of the rich inner landscape of loving-kindness that lives in each one of us.

Cost: $20 per session. All welcome, regardless of funds.

Ecstatic Dance
Saturday, Februaty 25th, 7:00-10:00pm

Ecstatic Dance Santa Cruz is a unique expression of a global movement; hosted and DJ'd by Hamid Martin and special guests.

Ecstatic Dance is a DJ'd, free-form dance/movement meditation experience. This can be a practice of surrendering to the moment and to our body's wisdom. It is an opportunity for allowing, feeling, and expressing all the emotional qualities and textures that make up this human experience; and for exploring what artistry moves through us/ as us in this expression.

You are invited to explore your inner landscape--alone and in community. What is it like to be in an environment that welcomes our inner chaos and un-groundedness? Also, what is it like to be firmly rooted in our own center, true to ourselves, while sharing space and interacting with others on the dance floor? And what unfolds when we carry this embodied truth and freedom beyond the dance floor, into our daily lives?

Also, please visit for more information supporting this global movement.

Monday February 27th, 7:30 to 8:45 pm. Studio, Donation.

Amita holds a direct transmission to the awakened state. Amita's core teaching is that you are already whole and complete. She asks you to let go of the false and fixed ideas that you use to identify yourself, and through that letting go experience the Truth of your Being. "When life unfolds from the core, we experience a deep sense of intimacy, of belonging. Intimacy means that there is nothing between you and the experience, no attitudes, no false identifications, no ideas of separation. Life is immediate, fresh and natural"., 505-231-1259.
