Laura Davis Will Help You Free the Writer Within
"I have met many [people] think they can't be writers because their lives aren't interesting enough to write about. This is simply untrue. Everyone's life is mysterious, beautiful, stunning magic. It doesn't matter if you've lived in the same town your whole life or traveled around the world seven times. What matters is your ability to open up to the breathtaking and spectacular adventure that happens to be your life. Your job is to experience it, see it, feel it, live it, and write it down."
--Leslea Newman

If you have a writer buried inside you, but the daily demands of your life have kept you from letting her out, "The Writer's Journey" will give you three hours a week to write, share your work, and experience the support of other writers. The Writer's Journey is not a critique group in which we polish finished pieces. Rather, we use class time to create new material. We alternate periods of writing with listening to each other-not from a place of judgment or analysis-but from a place of focused attention and deep acceptance The Writer's Journey is rooted in writing practice, developed by Natalie Goldberg in her classic book, Writing Down the Bones. Laura brings in writing suggestions, excerpts from literature, guided meditations and exercises designed to open the channel from your heart to your head to your pen. These workshops are designed for people who write to know themselves better, who have stories they want to tell, or who want to use writing as a daily discipline or practice. New students can sign up for their first month of classes at a special discount; ongoing students sign up for two months of class at a time.

Cosmic Dance
with DJ Moody Shapes and Light Facilitation by Brynne Flidais
Saturday, September 9th, 8:00-10:00PM

S P A C E is created for your own movement exploration, to dance with whatever is true for you, happy sad angry glad, there is space enough for it all here. The dance is what we make it together, a co-mingling of hearts, a unique expression of the present.

DJ Moody Shapes (aka Michael Reinhold) has a passion for music that inspires ecstatic movement, and is always looking for unique sonic gems that give a sense of permission to move in ways you may have never moved before, to light up the dance floor with the joy of discovery and the unexpected.

Brynne Flidais of Moveintuit brings Cosmic knowledge to the dance floor. Just as the moon's force pulls the ocean's tides, our bodies are influenced by the movements of celestial spheres. Blending our dance with Cosmic wisdom facilitates a deeper understanding of our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves. May we heed the lessons of the planets as we make manifest our soul's purpose.

To help us hold the container of this dance ... please no talking in the space, you are invited to communicate through your body and movement ... please request permission through eye contact or playful dance before making contact, and respect others' choice to dance alone -- hands-to-the-heart (namaste) is a good way to say "no thanks" or to end a dance... please no chemical colognes or perfumes (for those of us with sensitivities)... please respect others' inner journey and dance space... please turn your cellphone to mute. ♥

course description:

creating a personal practice
Creating a personal practice is essential to maturing one's skills as a yoga practitioner and is an integral part of studying Shadow Yoga. While persistence and devotion are required, one also needs a flexible, creative set of tools and a solid theoretical understanding to meet one's changing needs from day-to-day and to realize the inner potentials of yoga.

The once-a-month weekend workshop format will afford the time and space to delve deeply into the practical, philosophical, and energetic basis of the sequencing of the Shadow Yoga Prelude Forms, the "seed" asanas, and primary asana-vinyasas. Students will gain a deeper understanding of how to utilize Shadow Yoga for personal growth, prepare the subtle body for the internal limbs of yoga, and address special therapeutic needs such as women's and men's health and recovering from injury or illness.

about in-depth studies
The Shadow Yoga In-Depth Studies course will be the first of a two-year program designed to offer students an opportunity to learn Shadow Yoga in a methodical way that will support a fruitful home practice. The first year will focus on foundational practices such as the three Prelude Forms, Kriyas, and Ayurvedic self-care. The second year will build from this foundation toward more subtle practices such as the "seed" asanas, asana-vinyasas, and inversions.

Oct. 14 & Nov. 18 will be held at the
Santa Cruz County Veterans Memorial Building
846 Front Street
Santa Cruz, CA 95061

Saturday, September 23rd, 7:00-10:00pm

Ecstatic Dance Santa Cruz is a unique expression of a global movement; hosted and DJ'd by Hamid Martin and special guests.

Ecstatic Dance is a DJ'd, free-form dance/movement meditation experience. This can be a practice of surrendering to the moment and to our body's wisdom. It is an opportunity for allowing, feeling, and expressing all the emotional qualities and textures that make up this human experience; and for exploring what artistry moves through us/ as us in this expression.

You are invited to explore your inner landscape--alone and in community. What is it like to be in an environment that welcomes our inner chaos and un-groundedness? Also, what is it like to be firmly rooted in our own center, true to ourselves, while sharing space and interacting with others on the dance floor? And what unfolds when we carry this embodied truth and freedom beyond the dance floor, into our daily lives?

Also, please visit for more information supporting this global movement.

Integral Spirituality
Friday, September 29th, 6:45 - 8:15pm

Inspired through the evolutionary unfolding of Spirit in general, but also through the work of Integral Philosopher, Ken Wilber, in particular--not to mention the burgeoning Integral Community worldwide--this MeetUp group is for anyone interested in exploring how an Integral approach to spirituality (and to life in general) might radically connect us to a higher, more embracing, more inclusive, & more loving practice and embodiment of Spirit in the world. We will be discussing, and practicing together (& at home if you like) the 4 major elements of an Integral Spiritual Practice: Waking Up, Growing Up, Cleaning Up, & Showing Up.

In this class we will continue cultivating our shared practice of Waking Up to increasingly subtler levels of our divinity--embodied in the Gross, Subtle, & Causal State-Stages of awareness--with 20 minutes of Qigong & 20 minutes of guided Meditation. Then, we'll be exploring and discussing the "Four Primordial Perspectives" of any and every occasion, including our very approaches to Spirit.

No mats or special gear will be required, but do wear loose, comfortable clothing. To cover the space rental & 'Meetup' fees each month there is a suggested donation of $5-$15, but no one will ever be turned away for lack of funds.

This will be a "white tantra" experience focused on soul healing and life force expansion. We'll de-armor the body and clarifying the mind so that we can create more productive life patterns. This opens up the path to more bliss and connection with the divine, whether within ourselves, with a partner, or with a whole community. *This is not specifically a couple's workshop. Individuals and pairs are all welcome.*

We'll have an opening circle to support each other with intention for the ceremony. Nick will serve the indigenous plant medicine cacao, grown organically in eastern Guatemala at a family farm that he visited personally. Pure cacao opens the heart, deepens meditative experiences, and fosters inner/outer connection.

Then Nick will lead you through an embodied practice such as an OSHO active meditation or a bioenergetics exercise. These shake things up on the cellular level, so we can reset the nervous system and re-write the muscle memory to literally feel more free and energized.

Afterwards we'll have an interpersonal exercise that still involves the body but adds in a communication element. This could range from re-patterning unhelpful social conditioning, to guidance around safe touch and intimacy. Then Nick will lead an integration circle to close the journey.

Registration: $20 advance, $30 day of event

Entry includes a full serving of ceremonial cacao.

A Gira is a spiritual work open to the public and based on the Afro-Brazilian tradition of Umbanda. During the ceremony, entities of light are received by initiated mediums to offer a blessing and energetic cleansing. These entities carry a spiritual wisdom which is associated with specific qualities of consciousness and Orixas (energies found in nature).

During the ritual, sacred rhythm, song and dance prepare the space for the mediums to invoke their spiritual guides. The public may consult the guides and receive the benefit of their wisdom for cleansing, balancing, harmony and blessings.
