7-9PM
Doors will open at 6:30...Advance ticket holders will have preferred entrance.

Santa Cruz Bhakti Productions presents....
Kirtan! An Evening of Ecstatic Chanting with Jai Uttal, Daniel Paul, and likely some more amazing guests!

$25 Advance tix available at:
http://jaiuttalsc.brownpapertickets.com/
$30 at the door

Embark on a vocal journey through the sacred sounds of ancient India.
Drawing from an unbroken tradition of Indian devotional singing, Jai Uttal will introduce and lead us in the ancient practice of "Kirtan" (or chanting), the heart of devotional yoga. This practice of calling to the divine creates a bridge between the individual and the eternal, opening the heart and welcoming the spirit. Sometimes soft andmeditative and sometimes loud and wildly rhythmic, Kirtan takes the participant on a deep emotional and musical journey through our mostly unexplored inner world. With solo performance and call-and-response group chanting, Jai creates a space of invocation, prayer, and heartfelt expression.

Jai has been leading Kirtans worldwide for over thirty years. "These ancient chants," writes Jai "contain a transformative power and healing energy. By singing these prayers we join a stream of consciousness and devotion that has been flowing for centuries."

No previous experience is needed. This is an exploration of the heart, independent of vocal or musical technique.

Jai Uttal, a Grammy nominated sacred music composer, recording artist, multi-instrumentalist, and ecstatic vocalist, combines influences from India with influences from American rock and jazz, creating a stimulating and exotic multi-cultural fusion that is truly world spirit music. Having traveled extensively in India, where he met many beautiful saints and singers, Bhakti yoga became his personal path. Jai has been leading kirtans around the world for more than 30 years, creating a safe environment for people to open their hearts and voices.

In 2014 Jai released two new albums, Return to Shiva Station: Kailash Connection, a wholly new re-envisioning of his groundbreaking album Shiva Station, and Lifeline: The Essential Jai Uttal and Ben Leinbach Collection, an unfolding musical celebration of their decade of collaboration that reflects the myriad faces of kirtan and beyond.

ABOUT DANIEL PAUL: Daniel Paul Fulbright tabla drum virtuoso who has been a mainstay of the kirtan touring circuit for 2 decades touring the world primarily with Grammy nominee Jai Uttal. His training draws on 9 years of study at the Ali Akbar college of music (Tal Vadya Degree) and life-long immersion into the folk music traditions of the temples and villages throughout India. www.tabladaniel.com

Prajna Vieira is a vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist and yoga teacher, best known as lead singer of the acclaimed kirtan ensemble "Mukti," and for her work with world music pioneer Jai Uttal. She began practicing kirtan at age five, and today she leads kirtans all over the west coast. Cosmic Dance
☆ COSMIC DANCE MONTHLY ☆
with DJ Moody Shapes and Light Facilitation by Brynne Flidais
Friday, August 18th, 8:00-10:00PM

S P A C E is created for your own movement exploration, to dance with whatever is true for you, happy sad angry glad, there is space enough for it all here. The dance is what we make it together, a co-mingling of hearts, a unique expression of the present.

DJ Moody Shapes (aka Michael Reinhold) has a passion for music that inspires ecstatic movement, and is always looking for unique sonic gems that give a sense of permission to move in ways you may have never moved before, to light up the dance floor with the joy of discovery and the unexpected. "Moody Shapes brings the booty shakes!"

Brynne Flidais of Moveintuit brings Cosmic knowledge to the dance floor. Just as the moon's force pulls the ocean's tides, our bodies are influenced by the movements of celestial spheres. Blending our dance with Cosmic wisdom facilitates a deeper understanding of our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves. May we heed the lessons of the planets as we make manifest our soul's purpose.

To help us hold the container of this dance ... please no talking in the space, you are invited to communicate through your body and movement ... please request permission through eye contact or playful dance before making contact, and respect others' choice to dance alone -- hands-to-the-heart (namaste) is a good way to say "no thanks" or to end a dance... please no chemical colognes or perfumes (for those of us with sensitivities)... please respect others' inner journey and dance space... please turn your cellphone to mute. ♥

An afternoon to discover "Movement of Life's Dance" with Armelle Six, the founder of the dance
Saturday, August 19th. 2:00 to 5pm

Join us in a deep listening of the natural movement of life within us, allowing it to unfold and guide us into a journey of alignment with Self. Through the body, we reconnect with who we truly are and allow the highest expression of the being we are to show itself... and take us into our true power.

Armelle is the founder of Movement of Life's Dance and also a spiritual teacher. Originally from Belgium, she lived for five years in the States and began giving satsang on a weekly basis in Hawaii starting in 2013. Later she moved to France and has followed invitations in Europe to speak and share her dance for the last three years there. She just finished a dance training for facilitators and has witnessed the awesome transformation the dance offers. Armelle is very happy to be returning to the States to share her dance here for the first time. She is also the author of two books, which are available in French called "Meeting in Presence" and "Happiness no matter what".

ETHICAL EATING & WORLD PEACE
A presentation by Will Tuttle, Ph.D
Sunday, August 20, 7:00 - 9:00 pm

Author of the #1 Amazon bestseller The World Peace Diet, Dr. Tuttle sheds new light not only on the underlying causes of war, injustice and exploitation, but also offers insight into how we can each contribute to a more peaceful, just and sustainable world. His research and synthesis is based on a new understanding of the far-reaching consequences of our food systems, as well as both science and ancient wisdom teachings. We are delighted that Dr. Tuttle will be performing some of his piano compositions as well.

Keith McHenry, artist, vegan activist, author and co-founder of Food Not Bombs, will give a brief talk, introducing Dr. Tuttle.

"Tasters" will be provided by Veg On The Edge, a new vegan restaurant with a West African twist. (We expect to have enough food for all, but it will be first-come, first-served).

We invite a sliding-scale donation of $5-$20 at the door (but no one will be turned away).

Ecstatic Dance
ECSTATIC DANCE SANTA CRUZ
Saturday, August 26th, 7:00-10:00pm

Ecstatic Dance Santa Cruz is a unique expression of a global movement; hosted and DJ'd by Hamid Martin and special guests. hamidmartin.com

Ecstatic Dance is a DJ'd, free-form dance/movement meditation experience. This can be a practice of surrendering to the moment and to our body's wisdom. It is an opportunity for allowing, feeling, and expressing all the emotional qualities and textures that make up this human experience; and for exploring what artistry moves through us/ as us in this expression.

You are invited to explore your inner landscape--alone and in community. What is it like to be in an environment that welcomes our inner chaos and un-groundedness? Also, what is it like to be firmly rooted in our own center, true to ourselves, while sharing space and interacting with others on the dance floor? And what unfolds when we carry this embodied truth and freedom beyond the dance floor, into our daily lives?

Also, please visit ecstaticdance.org/guidelines/ for more information supporting this global movement.

Writers
THE WRITER'S JOURNEY: WEEKLY WRITING CLASSES WITH LAURA DAVIS
Fall Classes resume Wednesday, September 6th
Registration Open Now

Laura Davis Will Help You Free the Writer Within
"I have met many [people] think they can't be writers because their lives aren't interesting enough to write about. This is simply untrue. Everyone's life is mysterious, beautiful, stunning magic. It doesn't matter if you've lived in the same town your whole life or traveled around the world seven times. What matters is your ability to open up to the breathtaking and spectacular adventure that happens to be your life. Your job is to experience it, see it, feel it, live it, and write it down."
--Leslea Newman

If you have a writer buried inside you, but the daily demands of your life have kept you from letting her out, "The Writer's Journey" will give you three hours a week to write, share your work, and experience the support of other writers. The Writer's Journey is not a critique group in which we polish finished pieces. Rather, we use class time to create new material. We alternate periods of writing with listening to each other-not from a place of judgment or analysis-but from a place of focused attention and deep acceptance The Writer's Journey is rooted in writing practice, developed by Natalie Goldberg in her classic book, Writing Down the Bones. Laura brings in writing suggestions, excerpts from literature, guided meditations and exercises designed to open the channel from your heart to your head to your pen. These workshops are designed for people who write to know themselves better, who have stories they want to tell, or who want to use writing as a daily discipline or practice. New students can sign up for their first month of classes at a special discount; ongoing students sign up for two months of class at a time.
